About Us
Located in the Northern Drakensberg, The Cavern has been welcoming families for over 75 years, during which time it has transformed from a simple farmhouse. Ruth and Bill Carte started the resort as a guest farm with modest facilities including thatched rondavels and communal bathrooms. Today, it is still a beloved place where families of all ages come back to make memories that will last a lifetime in the stunning mountains.
The Cavern Lodging
The resort has a range of pleasant places to stay, all of which are surrounded by beautiful gardens and native fern woods. Guests have the choice of:
Standard Rooms
These rooms are great for couples or small families. They have their own toilets, tea and coffee making amenities, and private patios. They are a quiet place to get away from it all, with views of the garden or the mountains and plenty of colourful birds around.
Rooms and Suites of the Highest Quality
The Superior Rooms and Suites include views of the historic Fern Forest and come with contemporary conveniences like TVs, bar fridges and private balconies. They are great for those who want more room and elegance. The Superior Family Suites are quite popular since they include two bedrooms, a living area, and a fireplace.
Choices that are good for families
The Cavern is a great place for families to stay since it has interleading apartments, three-bedded rooms, and big suites that are easy to get to. There are separate eating places and a lot of activities to keep kids busy.
Eating and Relaxing
Guests may eat all they want in the main dining room or the charming children’s dining room. The resort’s healthy food is a highlight, and there is a good range of quality wines to go with it. The spa on site has treatments that will help you rest after a day of exploring.
Things to do and see
The Cavern is a great place for anyone who love being outside. You can go on guided treks, ride horses, fish, and mountain bike there. All Out Adventures, which is close by, offers thrilling activities like zip-lining and bridge swinging. There are more than 196 types of birds that birdwatchers may see, including the uncommon Drakensberg Rockjumper.
Conservation and Facilities
The Cavern is dedicated to protection since it was one of the first members of the Northern Drakensberg Nature Reserve. While supporting eco-friendly tourism, guests may walk on clean pathways. The Royal Drakensberg Education Trust also helps with local education projects at the resort.
Make Plans for Your Stay
Rates include lunches, teas, and guided treks every day. There are also seasonal deals. Families, couples, and lone travellers are welcome at The Cavern all year long, although they need to reserve ahead of time during busy times.
