About Makhanda
Makhanda is a historic city located in the Eastern Cape‘s Frontier Country region, approximately 130km northeast of Gqeberha. Positioned between the grassy plains of the Great Fish River basin and the rugged hills of the Suurberg range, this academic centre combines urban energy with natural beauty. Makhanda’s elevated location at about 580 metres above sea level gives it a moderate climate compared to surrounding areas.
Formerly known as Grahamstown, Makhanda serves as the administrative hub of the Makana Municipality and is home to Rhodes University. The city’s strategic position along major transport routes makes it an important service centre for the surrounding agricultural districts while maintaining strong connections to its 19th century frontier history and Xhosa heritage.
