About Aberdeen

Aberdeen, Under the Camdeboo Mountains

The Camdeboo Mountains, whose name comes from a Khoi word for ‘green hollow’, provide a constant, dramatic backdrop to this Karoo town. Aberdeen’s most prominent landmark, however, is the 50-metre tower of its Dutch Reformed church, the highest of its kind in South Africa, which draws the eye from kilometres away across the plains.

The area’s recorded history stretches back to the late seventeenth century, when Governor Simon van der Stel sent Ensign Shriver from the Cape to barter trade goods with local groups, marking some of the earliest European activity in this part of the Karoo.

A drive or stroll through the town, designated an Architectural Conservation Town, is an exercise in discovering heritage, with Victorian buildings and that notable church awaiting architectural viewing. For more active pursuits, the nearby Camdeboo National Park is the primary destination. Here, you can hike amidst the 120-metre dolerite pillars of the Valley of Desolation, a National Monument, or tackle the Camdeboo Koedoeskloof 4×4 Trail. A short drive away in Nieu Bethesda, the Art Centre offers a different kind of exploration, while local farms in the area welcome visitors for teas and lunches.

With an average temperature of 17.56°C and only 260mm of annual rainfall in its semi-arid climate, Aberdeen suits travellers looking for clear skies and outdoor activity, though warm evening layers are advised. It appeals strongly to road-trippers, photographers, and those with an interest in heritage or geology, functioning well as a weekend destination or a stop on a longer journey between centres like Graaff-Reinet and the N1. The town’s calendar is punctuated by community gatherings like its first ever festival, adding a contemporary layer to the historic streets.

Positioned within a few hours’ drive of Graaff-Reinet, Nxuba, and the Garden Route, Aberdeen is a practical and rewarding detour. From here, your next steps could involve securing a comfortable guest farm stay, sampling local Karoo cuisine, or planning a day’s cycling on the mountain biking routes that thread through the Camdeboo landscape.
