About Storms River

Storms River, Where the Forest Meets the Sea

The defining landmark of this region is the Storms River bridge, a concrete arch that soars 120 metres above the river gorge, carrying the N2 highway across a dramatic divide between the deep Tsitsikamma forest and the rugged Indian Ocean coastline. It provides a literal and spectacular gateway to the Tsitsikamma National Park, a protected stretch where ancient yellowwood trees reach for the sky and the famous Otter Trail begins its five-day coastal route.

This section of the Eastern Cape coastline has a layered history of contact and conflict, being one of the first areas settled by the Portuguese in the 15th century and later by the British in 1820, a period that saw many wars between Khoisan, Xhosa, British, Dutch and German groups.

Adventure is anchored to specific places here. From the Bloukrans Bridge, just a short drive away, you can experience one of the world’s highest commercial bungee jumps at 216 metres. Within the Tsitsikamma forest itself, operators run canopy tours and ziplining circuits high above the forest floor, while the Storms River Mouth is the launch point for guided sea kayak tours and unique kayak-and-lilo trips up the river gorge. The network of paths includes everything from short coastal hikes near the Storms River Mouth Rest Camp to multi-day forest trails like the Tsitsikamma Mountain Trail.

With a warm, temperate climate and annual rainfall of around 810mm, the area is visitable year-round, though summer highs can reach 32°C and winter days a milder 18°C. It suits travellers seeking active exploration, from families enjoying the suspension bridges at the Mouth to dedicated hikers and adrenaline seekers. For a mid-week cultural interlude, Taste Bistro in the village hosts live music every Tuesday and Friday evening from 6pm.

Storms River Village serves as a convenient base, with easy access along the N2 to the larger centres of Plettenberg Bay and Knysna for day trips. Whether you’re staying at the forest lodge, the rest camp by the sea, or a village guesthouse, you’ll find your visit framed by the constant sound of the ocean and the profound quiet of the old wood forest, with a long list of specific adventures waiting on your doorstep.
