About Haga Haga

Haga Haga, Eastern Cape Wild Coast

The Morgan Bay Cliffs stand as a dramatic, high-walled gateway to the Indian Ocean, their presence defining the coastline here. Haga Haga itself is a coastal village positioned along a stretch of the Wild Coast, offering a direct contrast to the more developed centres like East London to the south-west and providing a base for exploring towards Kei Mouth, Gxarha, and Chintsa.

The village’s distinctive name has a practical origin in the Xhosa phrase “Haka Haka”, meaning to “hook on”. This refers to the historical challenge of crossing the beach with ox-wagons, where teams of oxen had to be hooked one to another to manage the terrain.

Activities here are firmly tied to specific landscapes. The Strandloper Hiking Trail traverses the coastline, while the Inkwenkwezi Private Game Reserve offers wildlife adventures and bird watching on its own eco trails. The Cape Morgan Lighthouse, a sentinel on the headland, is a landmark for those enjoying rock and surf fishing or shell collecting along Haga Haga Beach, which is also a location for swimming and surfing. Horseback riding, mountain biking, golf, and tennis are other pursuits available within the area.

With a Mediterranean climate and summer highs around 30°C, the region appeals to travellers seeking an active coastal holiday, though it’s worth noting most of the annual 694mm of rainfall occurs from October to March. The village suits families and outdoor enthusiasts, particularly over the festive season when the OppiePlaas Family Fest on 29 December adds a local event to the calendar, making it ideal for a longer stay to fully engage with the environment.

For those travelling the coast, Haga Haga is part of a sequence that includes Port Alfred to the south-east and smaller villages like Gxarha along the Wild Coast route. Its position makes it a destination in its own right rather than a mere stopover, with various accommodation options available for visitors looking to explore the local dunes, forests, and that famous cliff-lined shore.
