About Stutterheim
Stutterheim is located in the Eastern Cape‘s Amathole District, approximately 60km northwest of East London. This picturesque town sits at an elevation of 850 metres in the foothills of the Amathole Mountains, surrounded by dense indigenous forests and clear mountain streams. The area enjoys a temperate climate with cool summers, chilly winters and higher rainfall than the surrounding region.
Founded in 1857 by German settlers, Stutterheim combines colonial architecture with stunning natural beauty. The landscape features plantations of pine and eucalyptus alongside protected pockets of ancient yellowwood forest. Stutterheim’s position along the N6 highway provides easy access while maintaining its peaceful mountain atmosphere away from urban crowds.
