About Sasolburg

Sasolburg is located in the Free State province, approximately 60km south of Johannesburg in the Vaal Triangle region. This industrial town sits on the northern bank of the Vaal River at an elevation of 1,475 metres, featuring a unique combination of petrochemical plants and recreational waterways. The area enjoys a temperate highveld climate with summer rainfall and cold, dry winters.

Established in 1954 to house workers from the nearby Sasol oil-from-coal refinery, Sasolburg has grown into an important industrial centre. The landscape contrasts massive industrial complexes with the scenic Vaal River and its associated dams. Sasolburg’s position along the N1 highway provides excellent transport links while maintaining access to the Vaal’s water-based activities and natural areas.
