About Swinburne

Swinburne is located in the eastern Free State, approximately 30km south of Harrismith along the N3 highway. This small settlement sits at the summit of the Van Reenen’s Pass at an elevation of 1,680 metres, where the Drakensberg foothills meet the Highveld plateau. The area experiences a temperate highland climate with cool summers and cold winters, often with snow on surrounding peaks.

Developed around the vital N3 transport corridor, Swinburne occupies a strategic position on one of South Africa‘s busiest highways. The landscape features dramatic sandstone cliffs, rolling grasslands and panoramic views across the Little Drakensberg escarpment. Swinburne’s location makes it a convenient stopover for travellers between Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal while offering access to pristine mountain environments.
