About Polokwane

Polokwane is located in the northern reaches of South Africa as the capital of Limpopo province, approximately 350km north of Johannesburg. Situated at an elevation of 1,310 metres on the Highveld plateau, the city enjoys a subtropical highland climate with warm summers and mild, dry winters. The surrounding landscape features typical bushveld vegetation with scattered rocky outcrops and the occasional baobab tree.

Originally established as Pietersburg in 1886, the city was renamed Polokwane (“place of safety” in Northern Sotho) in 2003. Today it serves as the economic and administrative hub of Limpopo province, strategically positioned along major transport routes to Zimbabwe and Botswana. The city blends modern urban development with strong cultural traditions, offering visitors a gateway to northern South Africa’s wildlife areas and cultural attractions.
