About Phalaborwa
Phalaborwa is a unique town located in Limpopo province, approximately 400km northeast of Pretoria. Situated along the Kruger National Park’s western boundary, this northernmost entrance to the park enjoys a subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The surrounding landscape features typical Lowveld bushveld vegetation, with the majestic Drakensberg escarpment visible to the west.
Positioned near the confluence of the Letaba and Olifants rivers, Phalaborwa serves as the only town in South Africa completely surrounded by nature reserves. The area’s rich mineral deposits have supported continuous human habitation for over 1,500 years, from ancient Iron Age settlements to modern open-cast mining operations that remain central to the town’s economy.
