About Pretoria

Pretoria is located in northern Gauteng province, approximately 50km north of Johannesburg in the fertile valley of the Apies River. As South Africa’s administrative capital, this sprawling city sits at an elevation of 1,339 metres on the Highveld plateau, enjoying a subtropical highland climate with hot summers and mild, dry winters.

Founded in 1855, Pretoria combines stately government buildings with vibrant urban neighbourhoods beneath its famous canopy of purple jacaranda trees. The cityscape features monumental architecture including the Union Buildings, numerous embassies and diplomatic missions, and the imposing Voortrekker Monument. Pretoria’s position within Gauteng’s economic hub ensures excellent infrastructure while maintaining distinct character as the “Jacaranda City”.
