About Soweto

Soweto (South Western Townships) is located in Gauteng province, approximately 20km southwest of Johannesburg‘s city centre. This vast urban area sits at an elevation of about 1,600 metres on the Highveld plateau, featuring a mix of informal settlements, middle-class suburbs and historic neighbourhoods.

Established in the 1930s as a township for black workers during apartheid, Soweto has grown into a city of nearly two million people. The landscape combines matchbox houses, modern developments and significant heritage sites that tell South Africa’s liberation story. Soweto’s position along major highways provides good transport links while maintaining its distinctive township character and vibrant street life.
