About Mkhondo

Mkhondo, formerly known as Piet Retief, is a historic town located in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa, close to the Swaziland border. Situated along the N2 highway, the town serves as a key agricultural and forestry hub, surrounded by rolling hills, timber plantations, and sugar cane fields.

Established in the 19th century, the town was renamed Mkhondo in 2010 to honour Chief Mkhondo of the amaNgwane people. Today, it blends its colonial past with a vibrant local culture, offering a mix of historical landmarks and modern amenities. The area’s economy thrives on farming, forestry, and cross-border trade, making it an important commercial centre in southern Mpumalanga.
