About Skukuza
Skukuza is located in Mpumalanga province, serving as the largest rest camp and administrative headquarters of Kruger National Park. Situated on the southern banks of the Sabie River, this safari hub sits at an elevation of about 260 metres in the park’s productive southern region. The area experiences a subtropical climate with hot, wet summers and warm, dry winters ideal for game viewing.
Established in 1902 as the park’s first ranger station, Skukuza has grown into a fully-equipped safari destination while maintaining its bushveld character. The landscape combines riverine forests along the Sabie with open savannah and dense thickets that support exceptional wildlife diversity. Skukuza’s central position along Kruger’s main road network makes it easily accessible while offering prime Big Five sightings.
