About Us
A History of Welcoming People
The Sleeping Bao, which has been there for more than 90 years, is a beloved icon in Pietermaritzburg that combines old-world elegance with contemporary luxury. We have repaired our face-brick historic building so that it may be a true South African getaway while still being close to the city’s lively pulse. The property was originally a private home, but in 2010 it was turned into a boutique bed and breakfast. It quickly became known for its friendly service and peaceful rural environment.

The Way We Think About Design
Our interiors honour KwaZulu-Natal’s history with handmade Zulu baskets and indigenous art, together with modern furniture. High ceilings and sash windows preserve the building’s traditional look while letting in natural light.
Eating and Wellbeing
Begin your day with a hearty English or continental breakfast made with fresh, local ingredients. Relax in our lounge with a well-chosen variety of South African wines in the evening. We don’t have a spa on site, but our concierge can set up massages in your accommodation or trips to neighbouring wellness centres.
Facilities and Sustainability
Guests may use the following:
- Swimming pool heated by the sun
- A place to braai with views of the mountains
- Parking that is safe and CCTV that works 24 hours a day
We are dedicated to responsible tourism by using solar geysers, collecting rainwater, and working with local suppliers.
