About Kathu

Kathu is a distinctive mining town situated in the Northern Cape’s Kalahari region, approximately 85km west of Kuruman. Founded in the 1970s around one of the world’s largest open-cast iron ore mines, this planned community surprises visitors with its lush greenery amidst the red Kalahari sands.

The town’s name means “town under the trees” in Setswana, reflecting its unexpected canopy of camelthorn trees that provide welcome shade in this arid landscape.
