About O’Kiep
O’Kiep is a small mining town located in the Northern Cape‘s Namaqualand region, approximately 570km north of Cape Town. Situated in an arid valley surrounded by rocky hills, this historic settlement was once the heart of South Africa’s copper mining industry. The stark desert landscape features quartz-covered plains and dramatic granite outcrops that transform into a floral wonderland during the spring wildflower season (August-September).
Positioned along the N7 route, O’Kiep enjoys a typical desert climate with scorching summers and cool winters. The town’s elevation of about 900 metres above sea level helps moderate the extreme temperatures common in this region. O’Kiep’s remote location in the Namaqualand semi-desert creates a sense of isolation and timelessness, with the surrounding copper-rich hills bearing witness to its industrial past.
