About Prieska
Prieska is located in South Africa’s Northern Cape province, approximately 240km south of Upington along the banks of the Orange River. This historic town sits at an elevation of 968 metres in the arid southern Karoo region, characterised by its dramatic semi-desert landscapes and extreme temperature variations between day and night.
Established in 1882 as a copper and zinc mining centre, Prieska developed around its strategic position along the Orange River. The town’s lush riverine vegetation contrasts strikingly with the surrounding desert-like terrain, creating an oasis-like appearance. Prieska’s location along the R357 route makes it accessible while maintaining its remote Karoo character, with the Orange River providing both scenic beauty and vital irrigation for local agriculture.
