About Springfontein

Springfontein is located in the Northern Cape province, approximately 120km south of Bloemfontein along the N1 highway. This small Karoo town sits at an elevation of 1,400 metres on the vast plains of the southern Free State/Northern Cape border region. The area experiences a semi-arid climate with hot summers, cold winters and low rainfall typical of the Great Karoo.

Founded in 1875 as a railway depot, Springfontein developed into an important junction on the Cape Town-to-Johannesburg line. The landscape features classic Karoo vegetation with scattered shrubs and flat-topped koppies, dominated by the town’s historic water tower and railway infrastructure. Springfontein’s position along major transport routes makes it a convenient stopover while maintaining its isolated desert atmosphere.
