About Sutherland
Sutherland is located in the Northern Cape province, approximately 370km northeast of Cape Town. This remote Karoo town sits at an elevation of 1,458 metres on the Roggeveld Plateau, surrounded by vast open plains and rugged mountains. The area experiences a semi-arid climate with hot summers, cold winters and exceptionally clear skies year-round.
Founded in 1858 as a church town, Sutherland has gained international recognition for its astronomical observatories. The landscape features typical Karoo vegetation with sparse shrubs and dramatic rock formations, all under what astronomers consider some of the clearest night skies on Earth. Sutherland’s location along the R354 maintains its isolated character while attracting stargazers from around the world.
