About Maropeng

Maropeng is located in Gauteng‘s western region, approximately 50km northwest of Johannesburg, within the UNESCO-listed Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site. This important paleontological area sits amidst rolling hills and ancient dolomitic limestone caves that have yielded some of the world’s most significant hominid fossils.

The site’s name means “returning to the place of origin” in Setswana, perfectly describing its role as the starting point for exploring humanity’s shared ancestry. Maropeng’s elevated position offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, with the Sterkfontein Caves – another key fossil site – just a short distance away.
