About Meadowlands East

Meadowlands East is a historic township located in Soweto, Gauteng, approximately 15km southwest of Johannesburg‘s city centre. Situated on the highveld plateau at an elevation of about 1,600 metres, this residential area forms part of the famous Soweto urban complex. The township was established in the 1950s as part of the apartheid government’s forced removals, giving it significant historical importance in South Africa‘s struggle narrative.

Meadowlands East features typical township architecture with a mix of older matchbox houses and newer developments. The township’s location provides easy access to major Soweto’s attractions while maintaining a strong local community atmosphere.
