About Southgate

Southgate is located in southern Johannesburg, Gauteng, approximately 15km from the city centre. This suburban area sits at an elevation of about 1,700 metres on the Highveld plateau, featuring a mix of residential neighbourhoods and commercial developments. The area enjoys a mild highland climate with summer thunderstorms and crisp, dry winters.

Developed primarily in the late 20th century, Southgate has grown around its namesake shopping mall into a thriving suburban node. The landscape combines middle-class housing estates with retail complexes and light industrial areas. Southgate’s position along major routes including the M1 and N12 highways provides excellent connectivity while maintaining its residential character.
