About Addo

Addo, Eastern Cape Bushveld and Coast

The defining feature of this region is the Addo Elephant National Park, a conservation area that has grown from its original focus on protecting a handful of elephants to a substantial 1,640 square kilometres. It now incorporates five of South Africa’s seven major vegetation zones, stretching from the dense thickets of the Zuurberg Mountains right down to include islands off the coast near Gqeberha.

The area’s significance as a crossing point is historical; Addo Drift was the first convenient natural crossing of the Sunday’s River inland from the sea, a geographical fact that shaped early travel and settlement patterns in the Eastern Cape.

Your days here are shaped by the landscape. In the national park, you can take a guided game drive or manage your own self-drive safari to watch wildlife, with the park’s over 600 elephants being the major draw. For a more concentrated predator experience, the privately operated Schotia Tooth and Claw Safari offers focused game viewing. Activities extend beyond the vehicle, with the park and other reserves offering guided bush walks, birding, and even evening astronomy lectures. For different perspectives, try horse riding along the coast with Beachcomber Horse Trails, observe conservation work at the Daniell Cheetah Breeding Project, or seek an adrenaline rush on the zip lines at Adrenalin Addo.

The area suits wildlife enthusiasts, active families, and those seeking a combination of bush and coastal experiences. A stay of two to three days allows for a thorough exploration. The Mediterranean climate, with an average annual temperature of 18.6°C, dictates the ideal visiting period; the dry winter months from May to September see mild daytime temperatures around 15°C in July, with less dense vegetation that makes wildlife easier to spot at waterholes. This seasonal clarity also provides the conditions for the challenging Addo Elephant Trail Run, which takes participants through sections of the national park.

Addo is practically positioned for travellers, within a few hours’ drive of the coastal city of Gqeberha and the ostrich-farming centre of Oudtshoorn, making it a logical and rewarding stop on a broader Eastern Cape itinerary. After a day of safari or adventure, the region’s lodges and guest farms often host boma dinners under the stars, a fitting way to conclude a day in the bush.
