About Matjiesfontein
Matjiesfontein is a unique heritage village located in the Western Cape‘s Great Karoo region, approximately 240km northeast of Cape Town. Situated along the N1 highway and historic railway line, this living museum transports visitors to the late Victorian era with its impeccably preserved architecture and atmosphere. The village lies at an elevation of 900 metres on the arid plains of the Karoo, surrounded by dramatic mountain ranges and vast open landscapes.
Founded in 1884 as a health resort, Matjiesfontein became an important stopover for travellers between Johannesburg and Cape Town. Today, the entire village is a declared National Heritage Site, offering a fascinating glimpse into South Africa’s colonial past. The clean, dry air and star-filled night skies make it an ideal retreat from city life.
