Visit Paternoster

About Paternoster

Paternoster is a charming fishing village located on South Africa’s West Coast, approximately 145km north of Cape Town. Situated along a crescent-shaped bay with powdery white beaches, this postcard-perfect destination is renowned for its traditional whitewashed cottages and working fishing boats. The surrounding landscape features rugged coastline, granite boulders and fields of wildflowers that bloom spectacularly in spring (August-September).

Positioned between the Atlantic Ocean and rolling farmlands, Paternoster enjoys a Mediterranean climate with cool sea breezes moderating the summer heat. The village’s name, meaning “Our Father” in Latin, originates from prayers said by shipwrecked Portuguese sailors. Today, it maintains its authentic fishing village character while offering sophisticated dining and accommodation options that celebrate its maritime heritage.
