Visit Prince Albert

About Prince Albert

Prince Albert is located at the foot of the Swartberg Mountains in South Africa’s Western Cape province, approximately 350km northeast of Cape Town. This laid back Karoo town sits at an elevation of 650 metres, where the semi-arid plains meet the dramatic cliffs of the Swartberg range, creating a striking contrast in landscapes.

Founded in 1762 and named after Queen Victoria’s consort, Prince Albert boasts over 50 provincial heritage sites with beautifully preserved Victorian and Cape Dutch architecture. The town enjoys a typical Karoo climate with hot summers, cold winters and low rainfall, while its mountain location brings cooler evenings. Prince Albert’s position as gateway to the Swartberg Pass makes it a popular stopover for travellers exploring Route 62 and the Klein Karoo region.
